Hypnosis Myth: Can You Get Stuck in Hypnosis?

One of the most common myths about hypnosis is that you can become “stuck” in the hypnotic state.

You can’t.

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and relaxation — not a place you can get trapped in.

During hypnotherapy, you remain aware of your surroundings and able to respond to your therapist. Your therapist simply guides you back to your usual level of alertness at the end of the session. And if the guidance were to stop, you would naturally come out of the hypnotic state in your own time, just as you naturally shift out of a daydream or a deeply absorbed state. Your mind would simply move on — you might open your eyes, stretch, look around, or simply continue relaxing for a moment before returning to your normal activities.

Hypnosis isn't something you can get stuck in. It's a natural state your mind can move into — and out of — every day.
